Best of the blogs – Mix 2: Nov ‘08
Back once again with another roundup of what’s been rocking my boat on the blog front. Big tracks this time from Santogold, Underworld (haven’t heard from them in a while) and the Get Physical crew, among others.
So, as Thanksgiving and the holiday season approaches here’s some party numbers for you.
The Black ghosts – Some Way Through This (Plastician & Skream Remix)
Kicking it off with some serious dubstep. Strangulated vocals yelp over distant brass and beware – the bass arrives with force.
Kid Sister – Pro Nails (Rusko remix)
Keeping on the dubstep vein, this one’s a real warbler. Sassy vocals drop half way through.
Get Physical (details coming)
A departure from their normal take on European house. All techy and breaksy on this particular offering.
Pete Lazonby – Sacred Cycles (Jon Cates remix)
A deep laidback groove underlies this subtle rumble-funk.
From the opening bars, you really don’t know which way this one will go. i’d file this under latino prog – well, that’s until the synthesized jazz noodlings drop down. Lookout for some middle eastern flute workout. Minilogue really push the boundaries of what you can jam in a track that construction-wise owes some debt to early techno.
Little Jinder – Polyhedron (coralcola remix)
Waspy synths and vocals a la border community floating over a a sturdy click borrowed from German minimal.
The rotating vocal reminds me of early Orbital work.
Underworld – Ring Road (Laidback Luke remix)
THAT riff. Back to trademark lyrics (with only a vague idea of what they’re on about).

As big as a continent. Pensive – think a train ride through Iowa.
Steve Angello – “Gypsy” (Laidback Luke Remix)
The scandinavian high-jinxers are back with some simmering house.
Like the title says, Say whoa. LA outfit A-Trak keeping the spirit of electro alive.
Santogold – L.E.S. Artistes (Left/Right remix)
You know the one. I couldn’t resist dropping this interpretation. Plays with the vocal to produce the kind of suspense Hitchcock would have been proud of.
Tone Loc – Wild Thing (Peaches remix-radio edit)
Ha! She had to do it. I HATED the Tone Loc track when it first came out. Must be a sign of age when I find him charmingly eloquent. Peaches offers the perfect retorts and the other side of the coin, so to speak.
