“Was brought up on all things Motown. My parents always had Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, The Four Tops, Diana Ross etc etc playing at home or in the car. My older brothers best friend, Doug, was like the gadget kid out of the Goonies and used to do mobile discos at weekends. He got me obsessed by the whole Djing side of things and when I was 13/14 he asked if I wanted to help him at weekends. I used to get to mix the next record in when he went to the bar or to the toilet. That was it. I was hooked. I got my first Technics 1200 when I was 14 and with a small 2 channel mixer given to me by Doug, used to tune Phantasy radio or tape recordings from Phantasy to one channel and practice mixing like that. A year later I got my other turntable. 6 months after this I discovered house music when a friend of mine took me to Trip at the Astoria…

That was it for me. I was totally blown away by the whole thing. I started buying records and checking out all the different events that were going on. After working away at the DJ thing for a few years playing in clubs all around London and for a time LA and San Francisco I landed a job doing licensing at a compilation label when I was about 19. Since then I have stayed in music working in promotion, at a label and now running my own artist management company. Sadly, the Djing side of things and the time to buy records has gradually slipped away but i’ve never totally let it go and still have a healthy appetite for vinyl shopping when I can!”

What’s that? A concept driven music night where people play music they really really like? It will never catch on. Not so for the Stick it On crew who’ve taken a gloriously simple idea and turned it into a lifestyle option and a succession of wildly successful nights up and down the UK. This week we’ve got one of their head honchos Rob Drysdale commandeering the decks for once – as opposed to loitering around them and sobbing quietly into his pint as ‘Groove is in the Heart’ gets its nineteenth million outing.

He says:
“So my All time Top 100 tunes – this is the first time I’ve felt totally self indulgent about playing music out in public. Usually you have the restrictions of time or place that dictates what you can and should play but not this time – no sireeee.

What tunes do you choose for your All Time Top 100? I can now sincerely sympathize with any person who has ever had to play at Stick It On and choose 15 minutes worth of their favourite choons – It’s bloody hard whittling it down to 100 let alone just 4 records – it would give me sleepless nights of what choons to leave out – so big respect to anyone who has played and worked through their mental turmoil of choon selections because invariably they are always the ones that rock the house.

I always liked to think that music reflects you as a person but as I scan my 100 list I kinda feel a little disappointed. Whilst thinking I was a bit of a dude with a bit of street cred (although who uses the term ‘street cred’ anymore?) my list tells me a different story. My new analysis of myself reads; “populist 80′s throw back who looks like he struggled with his sexuality from time to time.” Not really the message I want to be sending out but sometimes the truth hurts. Anyhow I am very very excited about the prospect of playing this Friday and if you could see the big fat grin I’ve got as I write this bi-og hopefully you’ll trust me, and my ability to pull out some choice tune selections which are truly my All Time Top 100 …. well for this week at least.

Ps Don’t worry it’s not all 80′s but being an 80′s child expect to hear some tunes that evoke a happy misspent youth interspersed with some of your Dad’s favourites, some of your Mums and of course some when you’re on Mum and Dad !!!! See you on the dancefloor x”

a bit of a coup this week – we have a selection of phil hartnoll’s faves. in case you don’t know who this guy is:

Comprising brothers Phil and Paul Hartnoll, Orbital were one of the first acts to emerge from the acid house explosion of the late 80s/early 90s and go on to successfully penetrate mainstream music and culture. Releasing a string of seminal electronic albums that were as accessible as they were innovative they effectively brought dance music into the homes of millions of people who might never have come into contact with it.

Following what many considered to be an era defining Glastonbury appearance they became mainstays of the international festival circuit. Combining their natural flair for pristine melodies and the dynamics of a traditional rock gig with techno and acid’s relentless pulse, they paved the way for the likes of Underworld, The Prodigy and Chemical Brothers who – all drawing from Orbital’s pioneering take on live dance music – soundtracked festivals and clubs for a whole generation of party people. However, behind the big hits and big shows is a raft of supremely emotive and evocative electronica that will be enjoyed by enthusiasts for many many years to come.

After 2004′s ‘Blue Album’ the brothers decided to call it a day, though both continue with various projects. Phil is concentrating on Long Range right now and his live show reaches the festivals across the summer. More at http://www.myspace.com/longrangemusic.

att100 this week featured jamie rainbow – part of the white rhino crew. in case you are wondering who the hell he is, here’s the bio:

Started DJing at 14 years old. Started working my way up playing soul, disco, in to early electro. Then got in to house ’86 / ’87 where I got my first residency aged 17 in Spain. After returning to Gloucestershire began setting up rave nights and a sound system in Stroud, bringing the likes of the DiY down to the West Country. Headed off to Ibiza in ’92 for four months which led to various gigs in Belfast also on Belfast City Radio. Opened my own dance music record shop in ’93 and had various residencies throughout Cheltenham, at The Monastry in Torquay and Dj sets at Fantazia.

I also set up record label ‘Bosh Records’ in ’93 / ’94. An outlet for breaksy techno with partner in crime Pete Daisy. After getting an instant distributor deal we went on to release 5 trax on the label and had support from the likes of Jon oo flemming, Blu Peter and many underground acid techno dj’s. This also led to many guest spots throughout London including ‘Trancecentral’ & ‘Bingo’. Around ’95 / ’96 I also played at the infamous ‘Feeder road’ warehouse parties in Bristol. After enduring far to many harsh winters i decided to venture afar to the shores of Goa where i managed to survive three seasons. During these hedonistic times I managed to play at various beautiful locations including The 9Bar and The shore Bar, plus I put on many huge outdoor parties. These all led me to lots of work back in Europe, including ‘Antaris’ in Berlin, ‘La Copera’ in Spain, ‘The Outhere festival’ in France and even Lithuania. I moved to Brighton in 2000 where i started various small nights and played many bars, i managed to win a dj competition and also got my own radio show. During these times i would venture up to Sheffield to visit my bro Adam (Adsorb) at the famous ‘Kenwood Studio’s’ where we made many breaks trax incl 1500miles which went on to be played by Meat Katie.

In November 2003 ‘White Rhino’ was born,a charity based breaks nite that myself and a few other people helped create. We’re still going strong after 3years and have brought the best quality Breakbeat/Electro house Dj’s to Brighton, including Soul of Man, Drummattic Twins, Elite Force, Diverted, Will White, JDS and many more planned for the months to come. In 2004 i also ventured over to Thailand, where i did a Breaks tour, playin at Bangkoks best clubs being filmed by MTV. I finished the tour off by doing a live set on Bangkoks biggest Dance Radio Station.

this week we have sam from ‘she likes parties’:

Sam was a difficult child, abstract and mild but always knew he was never destined to become the Prince of Wales. So instead he sat in his room devouring fragments of fiction from the blank generation and deciding that modern life was indeed, rubbish. He knew those teenage dreams were hard to beat so he followed them down to brighton to study business. Soon he realised his life was very boring as an office clerk and donned his rasperry beret and decided to turn up repeatedly to other peoples nights and walk like an egyptian until they noticed him. After annoying them to such a degree that they had no other option people began to let him DJ, then promote and eventually co-run She Likes Parties. All that is left now is to say to hell with poverty and take over the world.

Sam has played with the likes of LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip, The Maccabees, Arctic Monkeys, Cut Copy, Jamie T and pretty much every other band passing through this town. He has written future music columns for Juice magazine, worked at Rounder Records and managed up and coming local superstars Peggy Sue and the Pirates and The Great Danger. There is lots more to come.

Expect:- Richard Hell, Television, The Velvelettes, Iggy Pop, Blur, Prince, Gloria Jones, Mclusky, Bloc Party, Kinks, Love, James Chance and The Bangles.

Ali first got into music after being bought an Abba Album as a kid, which bizarrely led to a healthy interest in Heavy Metal especially AC/DC. A life changing experience followed shortly after listening to Grandmaster Flash on a Sony Walkman and then dovetailed into a short career as a very bad Breakdancer in Somerset (Word). He spent the initial part of the UK Rave scene dodging The RAF Police, playing and partying all over the UK for many years including slots at Glastonbury, Megadog and Rezerection. While in the RAF he helped introduce the sound of Nu Skool Breaks to Newcastle whilst stationed there in 1997, before relocating to Brighton in 2001 where he’s gigged extensively in clubs across town alongside the likes of Happy Mondays, Bugz in the Attic, Gilles Peterson, Josh Wink, Carl Craig and most recently “UK Godfather of Electrofunk” Greg Wilson.

While in the RAF he helped introduce the sound of Nu Skool Breaks to Newcastle whilst stationed there in 1997, before relocating to Brighton in 2001 where he's gigged extensively in clubs across town alongside the likes of Happy Mondays, Bugz in the Attic, Gilles Peterson, Josh Wink, Carl Craig and most recently "UK Godfather of Electrofunk" Greg Wilson.
