Well, one day we’ll be back in the sizzling hot sun of summer – stoop parties, hoards at every ice cream parlor, hanging out in parks with boom boxes blaring a boisterous roughneck soundtrack. Well, here in SF we’re still not quite there yet, but let’s start getting in the mood.

I originally posted part 1 of this J Period Dancehall Soundclash mix last year, and due to demand am offering up part 2 here. There’s no let-up in intensity, and we find ourselves once more engulfed in a heady concoction of dancehall, reggaeton, ragga, hip-hop and a spattering of jump-up pop classics.

Strange love in Moscow

Well, it all started with this remix of the MJ track ‘Stranger in Moscow’ which was unfamiliar to me as by the time History came out, I’d largely lost interest. Well, that track didn’t even make it onto this mix in the end. I ended venturing a little further leftfield into more tribal territory. Don’t despair, black heart day is only around the corner and I couldn’t resist the Sandcastles remix of that old Robin S Euro-thumper ‘Show me love’. Forgive me, all you purists out there.

Rakim: return to the golden age

In terms of rappers that have been around the block, there are few that have traveled further than Rakim. From the early days with Eric B, The R established himself as one of the true legends behind the mic.

Blentwell feature a great showcase from Elmattic tracing the history of this boy with the golden tonsils from Queens. There’s something in this laidback delivery that you rarely see in current hip hop but at the time was popularized by Rakim and the likes of Guru from Gangstarr.

The other thing about Rakim is that just about everybody remixed him (his biggest hit in the UK being ‘Paid in Full’ remixed by none other than a very young Norman Cook) and there are a bunch of those remixes featured here. Some of my faves are the ones where the vocals are cut back to grunts and shouts over a percussive workout.

Scratch that itch: shiny new toys for Ableton

Amazing what happens when you get together 4 fingers and the new Akai Ableton controller with aesthetics borrowed from a ’seventies dancefloor.

“The APC40 Ableton Performance Controller in action!” screams the headline. More wrist action than a spotty teen during rainy summer hols.

The wonderful Square Productions (no, I have no idea what that means) really do go in-depth when they cover something. Recently they highlighted some of their choice picks and plumped right in the middle was that man Matthew Dear. I missed him when he recently passed through San Francisco, so matching the expectancy of his 12 minute epics as Audion, I guess I continue to wait, baited breath and all (is that really how you spell ‘baited breath’?)

Still if you enjoy the funkier side of minimal (or if you didn’t think that was possible), check this out. And for those of you in the dark,

Clear out the cobwebs: Best of the blogs mix 4

This latest installment in the Best of the Blogs series in some ways becomes a continuation of the recap of 2008 posts we’ve been running. Many of these tracks showed up on other blogs’ lists of the best of 2008.

Maybe it’s because it’s winter and the days are short, maybe it’s because I have a latent need to party, maybe it’s because I’m getting old and need to listen to music to keep me up; whatever it is, this particular selection is definitely one of the more upfront mixes I’ve put together. AC Slater – Jack Got Jacked
“In the beginning there was a groove…” and then this groove got completely reworked by AC Slater’s crazy techno proto-house.

Souldiers of Fortune – Jungle Boogie (Ryan Riback’s Get Down Remix)
Another rework of an older number. I was never that keen on the Kool & The Gang original (popularized by Tarantino in Pulp Fiction). This dubbed-out remix I can deal with, though.

K.I.G – Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes
Apparently this is doing the rounds on the UK Urban scene. Beware – heavily addictive. Fun video to boot.

AC Slater – Party Like Us (Original Mix)
Another stomper from that man Slater.

Justice – We Are Your Friends (Disco Villains Remix)
The Justice bomb gets a reworking from the Disco Villains crew.

Dani Deahl – Poppin’ Bottles (House Moguls remix)
Infectious beepline running through this jittery slab of electro-tech.

Larry Tee – I Love U (Bart B More Secured Dub)
I’m afraid I’m not sure where this corker came from, but the raw thump of the bass is what snagged me.

Jesper Dahlbäck – Spagat (Flanger)
Raw screwed up techno.

The Twelves do a fine job on one of the hit tracks of the last 12 months.

Those Disco Villains are back. Just when you think it can’t get any nuttier, it yodels.

Not quite sure where this trancey little number came from. But Deadmau5 has done a fine job tweaking Morgan Page’s vocal trance.

Blob. Blob. Blob.

Kleerup – Until We Bleed (With Lykke Li)
Lykke Li has built up quite an indie following. Here her vocals are perfectly matched with a delicately-inflected beat.

Cut Copy – Hearts On Fire (Aeroplane Pop remix)
Aeroplane, the dahlings of the emerging Balearic scene get their blissed-out paws on this Cut Copy hit.

R.S.A.G – Days Go By
This one dropped from the moon. Seriously, I have no idea where this came from. Heavily reminiscent of The Doors, this is one well-crafted ballad.

Dax’s cream of ‘08 – my bootlegged mixtape

The other big treat for me on a recent night out in Liverpool came in the shape of an anonymous-looking CD from fellow beat-mongerer Dax. We take the year-end as an excellent opportunity to exchange tunes that rocked our boat over the previous twelve months. It’s great for me to get some insight into the dance scene in ‘ole Blighty given I’m half a world away.

So, I also took the opportunity to hand pick from Dax’s selection and juggle them around in Ableton. And the mixtape below is what I came up with.

Oh, and I couldn’t resist throwing in a few Laidback Luke bootlegs I found on the web, as he was the other big highlight of the night.

With more and more producers/DJs salivating at the potent promise of touch screen interfaces, it was only a matter of time before the omnipresent iPhone entered the arena as a music playing device.

In this video presentation, Christopher Willits goes through the steps of hooking up an iPhone to a Mac over a wireless connection so that you can manipulate an equalizer and trigger samples using the touch screen of the phone.

The steps are roughly as follows:

Load the app onto your iPhone
Download software that can pick up the wireless signal
Download more software that turns that wireless signal into MIDI signals
Assign those MIDI signals through Ableton

Given that the signals can be assigned however you wish, you really can hook the interface up to just about any part of Ableton.
There’s a segment half way through the video where Willits, with tongue half in cheek tells you what you really shouldn’t do in a live setting: animatedly wagging around the iPhone with the rock and roll gait a percussionist might employ on a rattle. Could this be the new face of DJing? Surely more expressive than pouring over the keys on your laptop.

I’d be interested to know whether you can hook up multiple iPhones to one Mac – to allow different users to control different parts of the music.

Oh the possibilities…
