News: Lady Sovereign is back + mp3

The biggest midget in the game Lady Sovereign is coming back at you guys with a fierce new track called "I Got You Dancing" and an almost fiercer new look (dig on the multi-colored hairstyle and African prints y'all), the first new music from the S-o-v since Public Warning (released in February 2007) and the preview to a new record she's just put word out about. Of the track and new album, she says, "...call it an early Christmas gift! I just finished writing the new album in London, it's going to release on April 7, 2009. The album is the next chapter, it's a massive leap forward for mankind!!!" "I Got You Dancing", for us at least, is way less grime than we've heard from Sovereign previously, instead opting for a more dancehall, ragga feeling and (what's that we hear?) utilizing Auto-Tune, our girl doesn't vocally sound like herself 100% either. Let's just hope that, for her sake and all of ours, none of that freaking-out-like-whoa stuff happens again. She sounds stronger here than she has ever sounded and we can be counted on to support her on this new record if "I Got You Dancing" is any indicator.

Unstoppable Perfect is dead. Long live Steam Machine. For the first ever in what will more than likely shape up to be the great Thursday night party in NYC in 2009 (though there's three more to be thrown before this calendar year is over), the dudes from Unstoppable Perfect and Cobra Kai have officially joined forces to create a Serato-using juggernaut.

Ah, the iPhone gaming industry is getting more and more electro-credible as the days go by. With the addition of the likes of Daft Punk, Justice, Digitalism and Moby, we can't hardly wait for all of the scruffy hi-top'd kids to show up in the NYC party scene and, instead of the usual looking bored and texting their friends, they'll be playing along to "Technologic" or "Pogo".

The new version of the rhythm game, called "Tap Tap Dance", features songs by five EMI acts -- Moby, the Chemical Brothers, Digitalism, Daft Punk and Basement Jaxx -- as well as independent acts Justice, Junkie XL, Soul Magic Orchestra and Morgan Page.

Our favorite track from (maybe) our favorite record of 2008 gets a low-key jittery remix treatment from the one and only Mr. Vega. Anyone who's unsure of how good 808s & Heartbreak is should listen to this song back-to-back with the original because it's immensely clear how easy it's going to be to hear any song off of Kanye West's latest record over the course of the next 12 months. Attention all artists putting out records in the near future: please let Mr. Vega know beforehand about your discs so he'll just keep pumping his own, sometimes better, versions.

To celebrate the release of his new field guide to surviving NYC prices and life on the cheap, Broke Ass Stuart brought some free food, free booze and free music to The Delancey. It became mayhem as soon as the open bar was announced and although the food didn't last nearly as long as we had hoped (however, consider us 100% smitten with all things Tuck Shop), we still had a good time and when the DJ put on Another Bad Creation's "Iesha", we full on lost it. Also, just watch out for this guitarist Kelli Rudick. She was amazing guys.

News: "Yo Gabba Gabba!" CD + second season airing now

Everyone's favorite weirdo kids show, "Yo Gabba Gabba!", came back for yet another wild season of dancing robots, fluffies and celebrities this past September and if the first season's guests are anything to go by (I'm From Barcelona, Datarock, Of Montreal, The Roots, The Shins, Hot Hot Heat, Jimmy Eat World), there's going to be way more fun to be had brought to you by one of wackiest minds in music, The Aquabats' Christian Jacobs. A CD's just been put out exclusively on iTunes of some of the most memorable songs from season one. The Ting Tings singing their version of Altered Images' "Happy Birthday" is crucial and really anything with Biz Markie gets our seal.

We love the fact that so many blogs these days are putting their knowledge, connections and haterade to good use by putting out their own releases, spreading the love of sometimes quirky, off-kilter yet never not-good tracks and artists. The dudes from one of our fave blogs, Shitz Popinov, just sent us word that they're first ever-release would be from a production team who just did a slamming banger of a remix of the Franz Ferdinand track "Ulysses, Black Apache. Look out for these guys for sure and totally go vote for this remix on the Beatportal competition page.

For the official afterparty of The Teenagers (they opened for Vampire Weekend at Terminal 5 on Wednesday and headlined The Music Hall of Williamsburg the next night), the kids over at Girls & Boys all hung out and DJ'ed. Inlets, the folky group led by Sebastian Krueger (of My Brightest Diamond) will be joined by Fred Nicolaus of Department of Eagles doing a solo set, Glass Ghost, and Angel Deragoorian (Dirty Projectors), who'll also be playing solo. There are supposedly special guests who'll join the party and for 5 bucks, it seems like a totally good idea. Maybe we'll see you there.

Cryptic shows are going to be in 2009, yeah? We think so. The show, which is going to happen on December 13, won't have an announced venue until the day before, so RSVP here to get in on the information.

News: Troubled economy hits Dischord Records

In a year that's been flogged with recession and the final act of the Bush administration, we're super sad to tell you guys about the word we received about Dischord Records, one of the flagship "independent" entities ever created in art. Because of all of the tides these days, the label is raising prices on all merchandise (a rather small amount, but still) in January. Pony up an extra buck for each CD/vinyl/whatever. In much brighter news relating to Ian and Jeff's label, they've started remastering and re-cutting much of their vinyl catalog to put up for sale and all will come with download options. The first four, including two EPs from Minor Threat, a split Faith/Void and the first vinyl pressing ever of One Last Wish's 1986 (featuring Guy and Brendan, later of Fugazi) are available now.

News: Release date set for Punk Goes Pop Vol. 2

On February 17, Fearless Records brings yet another edition to their successful compilation series Punk Goes... with the release of the second volume of Punk Goes Pop. There's no tracklist yet or any real information aside from the artwork and the release date, but the previous volume (released way back in 2002) had contributions from the likes of Further Seems Forever, The Starting Line, Reach The Sky and one of our favorite bands ever, Showoff.

Live: Nick Diamonds (Islands) does Knitting Factory benefit show

Maybe it sounds like it's a benefit for Knitting Factory because of how we worded it, but whatever. That's not what it is. The ex-Unicorn/now-Islands lead Nick Diamonds is curating a benefit concert for New York Cares and it just so happens to be going on at Knitting Factory. As part of the organization's Winter Wishes program (now in its 20th year), Diamonds has put together a line-up that includes David Cross, Fred Armisen, Marnie Stern, Conrad from Trail of Dead, Leona Naess, Despot and a few others. It's twenty bucks and 100% of the proceeds will go to New York Cares. It all goes down next Monday, December 8.

Oh, Parlophone, you're so funny, posting this new clip from Lily Allen with no description on YouTube in the "Pets & Animals" category. The song itself has already been viewed nearly 80,000 times when it was released three days ago, and we have a feeling that the video is going to be huge. Lily looks amazing (seriously) throughout and dig the whole "Material Girl"-stylized pouty-dudes-dancing scene. Clever lift. News: Sonic Youth to play with John Paul Jones

Between April 16 and 19 of next year, BAM will be hosting a showcase about famed choreographer Merce Cunningham called "Merce Cunningham At 90". Cunningham is often described as the world's greatest choreographer and so it only makes sense that, in his honor, a few of the world's greatest acts will pay him tribute--in music. During the ceremonies, the showcase will feature music from Sonic Youth, former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones, and mixed-media sound composer Takehisa Kosugi. Tickets go on sale January 21.

The 1900s, that wonderful troupe of Midwesterners (fine, they're from Chicago) who create intensely beauteous indie pop, have just issued a mini-album called Medium High for digital release (with a physical release happening January 20). "Age Of Metals", the first track we've gotten our hands on from the release, is a masterpiece of acoustic guitar, drum repetitions and vocal caterwauls, but thematically, it's far from the conceits of Cold & Kind, the band's debut. Looks like they've been playing LPs by Will Oldham a lot during the break.

News: Bumblebeez to write thirty songs in thirty days

For the entire month of December, the Aussie brother-sister Colonna crew (Chris and Pia) Bumblebeez will be sharing with the world a new track every day...hopefully. This will be the first work since August's US release of the Prince Umberto & The Sister of Ill LP. Let's all keep fingers crossed about the kids actually being able to finish the task, but either way, it's a pretty rad idea to finish off the year. The first track, "Follow The Seals To The Land Beneath Us", can be heard on the band's website.

Guilty pleasure pop is totally not a guilty pleasure anymore. In a world where every new band has some genre classification with lots of hyphens attached, we like to describe La Roux as, well, just smashingly good. No need to condense this into neat little packages, just press play and listen. The debut single from La Roux, "Quicksand", is out now on Kitsune and the video is amazing. A-ma-zing. It doesn't hurt of course that Elly Jackson is also the kind of quirky-good-looking girl you fell in love with sophomore year, right?

Live: Famous Friends 1-year anniversary with The Twelves

Okay, but seriously guys. It's amazing to us here that the cutest party kids ever, Famous Friends, have only been at it for 365. Like, whoa, feels like waaaaay longer than that. Dudes have been killing it, first destroying our fair Brooklyn and then moving on to a full-out assault on all of NYC. We're so happy that we've known all four of them (Bradley D, VDRK, Ruthie and Beth) and will continue to as good people who just like to party and hang and make sure everyone else is smiling all fucking night. They're turning the ripe old age (in nightlife at least) of 1 this coming Saturday at Europa in Brooklyn, and they're bringing out the guns. For the first time in the US and the first time in NYC, Famous Friends are debuting The Twelves.

The Twelves are one of those DJ/production duos that come along every so often, basically slaying all that came before and challenging all who'll come after. The Brazilian duo came to prominence in '07 with a smashing "Boyz" remix which immediately put them on the blow-up and they followed that one up this year with dozens of commissioned or not-so-commissioned work. What you may not realize, though, is that João Miguel and Luciano Oliveira are as handy in the studio as they are in a live setting, where the duo create a slamming set of the freshest treatments and unreleased (or forgotten) tracks right up next to their own performance, which features the duo using keyboards, drum machines, samples and on-the-fly techniques to bring your ass-shaking bodies up to the heavens.

The line-up also includes AC Slater, Finger on the Pulse, Bradley D and VDRK and the whole damn thing is hosted by Rude Bear, Palms Out Sounds and Big Stereo. Tickets are 12 bucks and we think you should get them post-haste.

News: The View to release sophomore record

It's called Which Bitch? (amazing, amiright?) and it's the follow-up to The View's excellent debut Hats Off To The Buskers. The record will be release on February 2 in the UK and the day after here in the states. The band will also be heading out on a UK mini-tour of sorts starting the day of release.

Sure, they're in February, but these dates coincide with the long-awaited release of the band's debut, self-titled release, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart. So, break out those C81 and C86 compilations for the next few months and wait til you can dance your ass off on these nights. Like this, the video for their new track, "Everything With You". We're trying to figure out why the band isn't playing a Valentine's Day date, but we'll let them get in touch with us for their reasons.

Awesome New Republic do Art Basel; NYTimes take note

Not only do the dudes in Awesome New Republic have news for you about their full length effort Rational Geographic (it's due out sometime in April next year) or about the new track that's currently streaming on their MySpace page, the slow-burning-funk-er "Digital World", but they're also playing two shows this week during Miami's Art Basel. And they got name-dropped in the old gray lady The New York Times last week. Holy shitbags Batman. We couldn't be happier for a ragged duo striving for notoriety about the greatness they've already found. They'll be at the Miami Art Museum on Thursday, December 4 and at Random Warehouse on Saturday. Both shows kick off at 8pm.

Live: One For The Team head out on tour + new single

The biggest little indie pop band from Minneapolis, One For The Team, are setting off on a month-or-so-long jaunt around the US. More dates are to be announced right now (the band did, after all, play about 150 shows in 2008), but these should whet your appetites for destruction (ha!). The guys and girl have also just released another single from the excellent Build It Up, a marching boy-girl-Mamas-&-Papas-gone-electric track called "Deconstruction Site".

Boy oh boy are the Danish duo getting into the holiday spirit. As they drop their final EP of 2008 (after both Beauty Dies and Sometimes They Drop By, not to mention that remix EP), Wishing You A Rave Christmas, Sharin and Sune aka The Raveonettes are kindly offering up a free track, called "Come On Santa". News: New Dillinger Escape Plan record on the way + thoughts on GN'R

In a MySpace bulletin from this morning, the dudes in Dillinger Escape Plan only hinted at their work on a new record, which they say won't be nearly done or released until late-09, if not later. The bulletin said, "We're writing, we've loosely set aside June and July 2009 for recording with Steve Evetts".

And in a longer-winded diatribe, these are their notes on Chinese Democracy:

I like it. There, I said it. I didn't like it at first but hear me out. It's not as good as Appetite, but as a whole I think it's better than Use Your Illusion...although the best songs on Chinese Democracy aren't as good as the best songs on Illusions. It's still, as far as mainstream rock releases go, about as good as you can ask for nowadays. It smokes Velvet Revolver and Godsmack and Hinder and whatever else people have been into in the mainstream rock world lately, and unless Freddie Mercury rises from the grave or Chris Cornell shows up at Kim Thayil's house I'm not holding out hope for much better. That's not saying a whole lot I guess, but seriously some of the arrangements and songs and solos and vocals and whatever else are pretty good. Some of it sucks though. Figure that stuff out Axl. News: Robin S. is back; collaboration with Corey Gibbons out now

Gibbons aka Kawa is a house DJ whose been around for almost ten years and has had a few banging club anthems this year (not to mention in the past) with the interestingly titled (?) "Chocolate Loving" and "Secret Rainbow", but now that this collaboration is in the bag and the track's been released, who really cares about his previous work? It's all about Robin S. It's only been, what, almost 15 years since "Show Me Love" burned a hole in dancefloors around the world, so now is as good a time as can be for a house anthem to emerge from Robin S. once again. News: Now, Now Every Children to release new record in February + mp3

We don't know the skinny on how the group Now, Now Every Children somehow shrunk from four members when we last left them to just the two cuties you see up above, but we'll leave that alone for a bit. More important is the news that the group has a new record available (digitally right now) called Cars, with a release date for the physical disc set for next week. Cars is the band's first full-length effort. The record's first single, also called "Cars", is a simple, effective, almost effortlessly great little track that showcases the band's penchant for heart-wrenching lyrics and fluttery, brilliant arrangements.

Hot shit from unknowns are totally going to be big in 09, we can already tell. Long gone will be the need to wait for Diplo treatments or that new banger from LA Riots. The UK-based blog mp3hugger (put that in your RSS feed pipe and smoke it, you guys) transformed a while back into a self-run digital-release-only label called Indiecater Records. We usually use this space solely to pump artists and acts, but in the case of remixer extraordinaire Mr. Vega, we'll waive that habit. And we're positive that after you hear the treatments this dude has done for the likes of Justice, Franz Ferdinand, Death From Above 1979 and The Kills (seriously, dude's probably worked on every track that's caught your attention over the last year or so), you'll be on the same page as we are over here. Sunset Cruisin make the kind of surf-inspired electro music that make us thankful for easy-going surfer dudes who listen to 8bit electro, watch "Point Break" and "Airborne" to the point of reciting lines incessantly and smoke as much of the green stuff as possible. UK doom and gloom group White Lies just released this, their second video under the direction of Andreas Nilsson (the first being their amazing clip for "Death"), last week and we have to say, it's rad. An obvious meeting of two of Sao Paulo's best and brightest, this new mix from the duo known as Database basically rips out the refrain of the Bonde Do Role track "Miami Beach" for a full-out stomp. And while the lyrics are merely a showing, the beat that the dudes employ is gripping. It's immediate and bouncy, much like the band whom they're riffing. This mix is old (September), but who cares? Evergreens are evergreens and, going into a holiday for the next bit, we're totally not leaving you hanging.

Emerging: Deleted Scenes

To get to the bottom of it, Deleted Scenes are a group of kids who live in Washington, DC and Brooklyn who just completed work on their first full length record with help from some dude whose name you may recognize: Burning Airlines/Government Issue/Jawbox's J. Robbins. Says Robbins of the band, "Where are the labels that should be chomping at the bit to release a band like this?"

The record is called Birdseed Shirt and we couldn't agree more with what Robbins is asking. They make the kind of rock music that's basically shit on these days and taken advantage of for being too "iPod commercial-y" or whatever because it's really catchy and has the happy-go-lucky vibes. Deleted Scenes are one of those bands that you can tell instantly that they love playing music and they're just having some fun, so if you're a hater of having fun, do not listen to Deleted Scenes. Enough said, really. Here's a video of the dudes busking at night in DC, dig on the guy playing drums with his shoes. Hilarious. The guys play Union Hall on December 13 as part of their tour/record release parties.

If you're not familiar with the dude who calls himself Broke-Ass Stuart, well, he's kind of a legendary zine figurehead in San Francisco who's gotten a lot of praise for his guidebook to that city for the "young, broke and beautiful". Stuart's just released his newest chronicle, one for Gotham, and to celebrate, there's a big party going down next Thursday at The Delancey. We'll be there and so will some of our fair city's up-and-coming acts, like Beyondo, Crooked Looks, Kelli Rudick and more. Free beer and food all night and entry's only a dollar, so pony up that GW and come hang.
